EditShare shared storage is much more than just a place to put your media and project files. With every XStream, Energy, and Field system, you also get Flow, our complete Media Asset Management system for file-ingest, scanning, logging, cataloging, and searching your media, stills, graphics, and documents. You also get Ark, our integrated backup and archiving software.
When you store your NLE projects on EditShare storage, multiple editors will be able to work in the same projects simultaneously. That means they can safely open up each other’s bins and sequences and edit as a team with one editor building on the work of another. While unlimited editors can get read-only access to bins and other metadata files, EditShare makes sure only one editor at a time gets write access. We do this not only for Avid but also for Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, Grass Valley EDIUS, and for our own Lightworks. Collaboration doesn’t stop at the NLE, however. With Flow, you can bring hundreds of non-editors into the production chain.
EditShare shared storage provides stream counts and throughput that can’t be beat. When you’re working in uncompressed HD or 2K, each 16-drive unit can sustain over 700 MB/sec in any mix of reading or writing. And when you’re working at lower bit-rate codecs such as DNxHD, ProRes, AVC-intra, or XDCAM, you’ll appreciate our multi-stream optimized hardware and software that lets more users get more work done.
Some storage companies only offer RAID-5 protection, but EditShare includes RAID-6 standard on every 12-drive, 16-drive and 24-drive storage system. Unlike RAID-5, which protects you in the event of a single drive failure, RAID-6 can sustain the failure of any two drives, and all your data still remains intact. The chances of a two drive failure increase proportionately with the size of the drives. The larger the drives, the longer it takes to rebuild after the first failure, during which time you are vulnerable to a second failure. Industry research shows that two drive failures are common today, and with large drives, only RAID-6 can give you true peace of mind.
Before purchasing a new storage system, ask what percentage of the disk space is actually usable. On all EditShare 16-drive systems, 87.5% of the disk space is available for your data. By contrast, on some competing systems that divide up 16 drives into multiple RAID-5 groups, you only get 75% usable space. The extra space you get with EditShare provides increased value.
Most EditShare storage systems can expand two different ways – up, and out. You can add more storage to a single server and you can also add additional servers to your network. One way or the other, you can build a system that expands into the petabytes (thousands of terabytes).
